melasma treatment sydney

Melasma appears as brown to grey-brown patches, often on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and jawline. It is more common in women, especially those with darker skin types or who have experienced hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or oral contraceptive use).

Causes

Melasma is triggered by a combination of UV and visible light, hormones, genetics, and sometimes heat or friction. It involves both superficial and deeper pigment, and can be influenced by certain skincare products or medications.

How is Melasma Treated?

  • Sun Protection: Daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen (ideally with iron oxides for visible light protection)

  • Topical Agents: Prescription or over-the-counter creams such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, niacinamide, or tranexamic acid

  • Oral Treatments: In select cases, oral tranexamic acid (off-label)

  • Procedures: Carefully selected laser or light-based treatments, such as Q-Switched Laser or the Fraxel Dual 1927nm Laser along with Superficial Chemical Peels — always tailored to your skin type and risk profile

Melasma can be persistent and may relapse, so consistent sun protection and maintenance are crucial.
