venous lake
A venous lake is a common, benign vascular lesion that appears as a soft, blue to purple bump—most often on sun-exposed areas such as the lower lip, ear, or face. While harmless, venous lakes can cause cosmetic concern or occasionally bleed if traumatised. Modern dermatology offers safe and effective solutions to treat these lesions, with minimal downtime.
what causes a venous lake?
Venous lakes develop over time due to chronic sun exposure and age-related changes in the small veins (venules) of the skin. Ultraviolet (UV) damage weakens the supporting tissue around these veins, allowing them to dilate and become visible. They are most common in adults over 50 and are strongly linked to a history of sun damage.
what does a venous lake look like?
Soft, compressible, blue to purple spot (2–10 mm in size)
Most often found on the lower lip, ear rim, or other sun-exposed facial areas
Blanches (lightens) when gentle pressure is applied
Usually painless and slow-growing, but may bleed if bumped or scratched
treatment with the nd:yag 1064nm laser
At NSDL, the primary treatment for venous lakes is the Nd:YAG laser. This advanced laser targets the blood within the lesion, gently heating and closing off the dilated vein while preserving surrounding skin.
Quick and effective: Most lesions require only 1–2 sessions
Minimal downtime: Mild bruising or crusting may occur and typically resolves within days
Low risk of scarring: The laser is precise and safe for delicate areas like the lip
Excellent cosmetic results: The treated area gradually returns to your normal skin tone
What to Expect
Treatment is performed in-clinic and usually takes just a few minutes
Some mild discomfort may be felt during the procedure
Aftercare instructions will be provided to support optimal healing
