Q-Switched Laser

A Q-switched laser is a type of laser treatment that uses a mechanism called Q-switching to generate very high power, short pulses of laser light to remove pigmented skin cells.

WHAT DOES the Q-Switched Laser TREAT?

The Q-Switched (QS) laser can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including melasma. Melasma is a condition characterised by brown or grey patches on the skin, typically on the face.

QS laser treatment works by delivering high-energy pulses of light to the skin, which causes the pigmented cells to break down and be absorbed by the body. This can help to reduce the appearance of melasma and improve the overall tone and texture of the skin. Multiple sessions are usually required for best results.

It's important to note that before undergoing any laser treatment, please have a consultation to determine if this treatment is appropriate for your specific case of facial pigmentation or melasma. β€―

How does the QS Laser Target the Pigment?

The Q-switched laser targets pigment by emitting high-energy, short pulses of light that are absorbed by the pigment in the skin. The absorption of the light energy by the pigment causes the pigment to fragment into smaller particles, which can then be absorbed and cleared by the body's immune system. The Q-switched laser is specifically designed to target dark pigments such as freckles, age spots, and tattoos, by selectively targeting the melanin in these areas.

What is the ideal time between QS Laser treatments?

The ideal time between QS laser treatments can vary depending on the specific condition being treated, as well as your skin type and response to treatment. Typically, it is recommended to wait 2-3 weeks between treatments for optimal results. However, I will be able to give you a more specific recommendation based on your unique circumstances.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT?

There is minimal downtime after having QS treatment. You may experience very mild redness on the day of treatmetn which can be covered with makeup. This way you can go straight back to work.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

Usually 4-6 treatments are needed for best results with top up and maintenance every 6 months.

What QS laser do we have at NSDL?

At NSDL we use the Lumenis Hollywood Spectra laser which uses advanced technology to deliver intense pulses of light to the skin, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. This laser also helps to improve skin tone and texture, and can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, and melasma. It's designed to reduce the appearance of age spots, sun damage and uneven pigmentation. It is considered a safe and effective treatment for improving the appearance of the skin.

What wavelengths are used in the QS Lasers?

The wavelength of a Q-switched laser can vary. Some common Q-switched laser wavelengths include:

  • 1064 nm (nanometers) for tattoo removal and pigmented lesion treatment

  • 532 nm for vascular and pigmented lesions and skin rejuvenation

  • 694 nm for hair removal

  • 355 nm for photoacoustic imaging and micromachining

  • 1320 nm for non-ablative skin rejuvenation

It's important to note that the wavelength of a laser is one of the key factors that determines its safety and effectiveness, so it's important to use the appropriate wavelength for the specific treatment being performed.

What is the Hollywood Carbon Laser Peel?

This is a popular cosmetic procedure that has gained significant attention in recent years. This treatment uses the QS laser that is non-invasive and allows for skin rejuvenation by using laser energy to target and exfoliate the outer layer of the skin. The treatment involves applying a thin layer of medical-grade carbon onto the skin, which is then penetrated by a laser beam. This beam heats up the carbon, causing it to vaporise and take away the dead skin cells, oil and other impurities on the skin. The Hollywood Carbon Laser Peel has quite a few benefits including reducing fine lines and improving skin texture and tone, minimising the appearance of pores and giving a brighter complexion. It’s a great treatment for anyone who has oily and acne prone skin.
